Psychologists in Pasadena

Licensed psychologists with deep roots in Pasadena.

Our Pasadena office is Suite 214 at 30 N. Raymond Ave, in the heart of Old Pasadena. Dr. Sonja Munson has practiced in Pasadena for twenty years and has seen clients in this very room since 2012. It is also where our founder, Dr. Reid Kessler, met with her weekly as her supervisee during his graduate training, and the two have consulted together ever since. Dr. Munson has now brought her practice into Coastal Therapy Group, working alongside Dr. Jessica Kim, our Director of Couples Therapy, who is now scheduling new clients.

The standard here is the same one the practice was built on at our North County San Diego offices in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista: every clinician holds a doctorate in psychology. That means thousands of hours of supervised clinical training, real depth in assessment and diagnosis, and treatment shaped around the person in the room.

Whether you're a few blocks away in Pasadena or anywhere else in California via secure telehealth, it starts the same way: a free 15-minute consultation call.

Why people start therapy here

You don't need the perfect words to reach out.

People rarely come to therapy with a tidy diagnosis in hand. They come because something isn't working. Some of what brings people to our Pasadena office:

  • 01 A relationship where the same argument keeps coming back around
  • 02 Anxiety that hums underneath everything, even the good days
  • 03 Depression, numbness, or a flatness you can't quite explain
  • 04 Old wounds that still shape how you trust, connect, and protect yourself
  • 05 A transition that has shaken your sense of who you are
  • 06 Grief, whether recent or the kind you never really got to have
  • 07 Self-doubt that makes it hard to trust your own judgment
  • 08 No crisis at all, just a desire to grow and become a better version of yourself

If you see yourself somewhere on this list, or you don't and you just know something needs to change, that's enough to start. Our care coordinator will help you figure out the rest.

Couples therapy and marriage counseling in Pasadena

Couples therapy and marriage counseling, where our work leads.

Couples therapy is a signature of this office, and both of our Pasadena psychologists practice it: Dr. Jessica Kim, our Director of Couples Therapy, who leads the practice’s training in couples work, and Dr. Sonja Munson, our senior psychologist.

If you and your partner keep having the same argument in different clothes, or the distance has crept in and neither of you can name when, couples therapy is a place to slow down and look at what's happening underneath. We draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and relational approaches to help partners find their way back to each other.

Marriage counseling here is not a referee’s chair. Whether you are married, engaged, or still deciding what you are, the work is the same: slow the cycle down enough that each of you can see what the fight has been protecting. For partners who want to move faster than a weekly hour allows, both Dr. Kim and Dr. Munson lead Couples Intensives in Pasadena: a focused three-hour session that goes straight to the core of what is stuck.

Relational psychodynamic therapy

We're interested in what's underneath.

Coastal Therapy Group is a relational, psychodynamic practice. In plain terms: we take the time to truly know you, not just manage your symptoms. We're interested in the patterns underneath: where they came from, what they've been protecting, and what it would take for them to loosen their grip.

That kind of work happens in a relationship. Your therapist won't be a blank screen or a cheerleader. They'll be a real person: present, honest, and rooting for you, helping you understand yourself in a way that actually lasts. Understanding, not just coping.
