What we do
Marriage counseling is couples work, but a marriage is not just any relationship. The two of you made a commitment to each other, often out loud, in front of the people you love. You have built a shared life, and maybe a family, on top of that promise. So when a marriage strains, the weight is heavier and it reaches further: to your children, your parents, your friends, the whole world you have built together. That is worth taking seriously, and it is worth protecting.
Whether you are weathering a specific crisis or have simply felt the closeness slipping, marriage counseling is a place to slow down, understand the pattern that keeps pulling you apart, and change it. For many couples, marriage is also a matter of faith or deeply held values, and we can hold that part of your relationship with care rather than set it aside.
Marriage counseling is part of our broader couples therapy practice; this page is for people looking specifically for a marriage counselor, a marriage therapist, or a marriage counseling psychologist near them in North County San Diego. We see married partners in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista, and online throughout California.
We are a private-pay, out-of-network practice, and we provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. See our Cost + Info page for current rates.
What we help with
Every marriage brings a unique history to the room, but the ways relationships get stuck are often familiar. If you see yourselves in more than one of these, that is normal.
The same argument on repeat, or a silence that has settled in where conversation used to be. We help you hear each other again.
Steadying the crisis, making sense of how it happened, and deciding together whether and how to rebuild. See affair recovery on our couples hub.
Feeling more like roommates than partners, and lonely inside your own marriage. We help you find your way back to each other.
Reconnecting emotionally and physically, including a sexless marriage or other concerns about intimacy, without shame or blame.
A new baby, a move, a career change, an empty nest, or caring for aging parents. Marriage carries the weight of every change.
When one or both of you is unsure, discernment counseling helps you find clarity before you choose a direction.
Why a psychologist
Most marriage counselors hold a master’s degree, which is real and valuable clinical training. What sets Coastal Therapy Group apart is that every clinician who does this work holds a doctorate in psychology, with years of additional study in how relationships form, why they struggle, and how they heal. When people search for a "marriage counseling psychologist" or a "relationship psychologist," this depth of training is what they are looking for.
Our approach is relational and psychodynamic. Rather than deciding who is right, we look at the cycle the two of you fall into: the moves and counter-moves that leave you both feeling unheard. Seeing that pattern clearly is often the first real relief, because it shifts the problem from "you versus me" to "us versus the cycle." From there, partners can respond to each other differently and rebuild a bond that feels secure.
This is depth work, not a set of communication rules to memorize. We are not here to take sides or hand out homework. We are here to help you build a marriage where both of you feel truly seen, valued, and safe.
More than one mind on your marriage
Every other week, our marriage counselors meet for a case consultation focused specifically on working with couples. Dr. Jessica Kim, our Director of Couples Therapy, leads it, and Coastal Therapy Group also pays outside couples-therapy experts to consult on our cases. Your counselor brings the work the two of you are doing into that room, so more than one skilled clinician is thinking about how to help your marriage.
It also means our marriage therapists keep learning together. Working with a marriage is genuinely hard, and the clinicians here sharpen their skills alongside each other on an ongoing basis, rather than practicing in isolation. Case consultation is a standard, ethical, and confidential part of good clinical care: not your private details passed around loosely, but a group of experienced clinicians thinking carefully, and with discretion, about how to help you.
Marriage counseling, answered
Marriage counseling is therapy for a relationship rather than for one person. A trained clinician helps two partners understand the pattern between them, slow down the conflicts that keep repeating, and rebuild trust and closeness. You do not have to be in crisis, or even married, to benefit.
Yes. Decades of research on relationship therapy show that most couples move from distress to a more secure, connected marriage, and that those gains tend to hold. It works best when both partners are willing to show up and look honestly at the pattern between them.
Not always. Many marriage counselors hold a master’s degree. At Coastal Therapy Group, the clinicians who do this work hold a doctorate in psychology, so you are working with a relationship psychologist trained in the deeper patterns that shape a marriage, not just communication tips.
Yes. Sometimes one partner is ready and the other is not. We can start with you individually, and when a spouse is unsure about the marriage itself, discernment counseling is designed for exactly that in-between place.

Clinically, yes. "Marriage counseling," "marital counseling," and "couples therapy" describe the same work: helping two partners understand and change the pattern between them. The difference is context, not method. People who search for marriage counseling are usually looking for help with a committed, often lifelong partnership, and sometimes one shaped by faith, family, and shared history, and we keep that in mind. You do not have to be married to come in, and you do not have to be in crisis to benefit. You can read more about how we work on our couples therapy page.
Yes. The research on relationship therapy is strong: most couples move from distress to a more secure, connected marriage, and those gains tend to hold over time. It works best when both partners are willing to show up and look honestly at the cycle between them. Even couples who feel stuck are often surprised by how much can shift.
It comes down to training. Many marriage counselors hold a master’s degree, which is real and valuable clinical training. Every clinician who does this work at Coastal Therapy Group holds a doctorate in psychology, with years of additional study in how relationships form, struggle, and heal. That depth is why people search for a "marriage counseling psychologist" or a "relationship psychologist" in the first place, and it is exactly what you get here.
The first session is mostly about understanding. Your clinician learns what brought you in, hears the story from both sides, and starts to notice the pattern the two of you fall into. There is no homework to dread and no taking sides. You will leave with a clearer sense of what is happening between you and how the work can help.
Yes. Sometimes one partner is ready and the other is hesitant. We can begin with you individually and work on your part of the pattern. When a spouse is genuinely unsure about the marriage itself, we offer discernment counseling, a short, structured process for finding clarity before committing to a direction. More on that on our couples therapy page.
Standard marriage counseling sessions range from $270 to $350, and a Couples Intensive is $900 for a focused three-hour session. We are a private-pay, out-of-network practice and provide superbills you can submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Current rates and details are on our Cost + Info page.
Sometimes, but coverage for relationship work is inconsistent. Most plans only pay for therapy when there is a diagnosed mental health condition being treated, and many couples do not fit that frame. We are a private-pay, out-of-network practice: you pay directly, and we provide superbills you can submit for potential reimbursement. Details are on our Cost + Info page.
It depends on what you are working on. Some couples come in for a specific issue and feel steadier within a few months; others stay longer to do deeper repair or to protect a relationship that already matters to them. Most partners meet weekly at first. Your clinician will talk with you honestly about what your situation is likely to need.
