Couples work in Pasadena

It is rarely about the dishes.

What happens between two people in a long relationship is rarely about the thing you are arguing about. It is about what each of you learned, early and elsewhere, about being close to someone and staying safe at the same time. When those two histories collide, the same fight keeps coming back, no matter how many times you resolve it.

Couples therapy is a signature of our Pasadena office. Both of our psychologists here work with couples: Dr. Jessica Kim, our Director of Couples Therapy, and Dr. Sonja Munson, who has practiced in Pasadena for twenty years. Marriage counseling here is not a referee’s chair. Whether you are married, engaged, or still deciding what you are, the work is the same: slow the cycle down enough that each of you can see what the fight has been protecting.

Why couples reach out

You don’t have to wait until it feels unfixable.

Most couples come in because something keeps happening that neither of them wants. Some of what brings partners to our Pasadena office:

  • 01 The same argument, again, in slightly different clothes
  • 02 A distance that crept in, and neither of you can say exactly when
  • 03 A betrayal or broken trust that has not healed
  • 04 A decision about the relationship that you keep circling
  • 05 Patterns from the families you each grew up in, showing up between you now
  • 06 Two families, two cultures, and expectations you are both carrying
  • 07 A transition (a move, a new baby, a new chapter) that changed how you are together
  • 08 No crisis at all, just a wish to grow closer and keep it that way

You don’t need to agree on what the problem is before you call. Most couples don’t. That is part of what the first sessions are for.

How we work with couples

The relationship is the client.

We draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and relational, psychodynamic approaches. Instead of taking sides or handing you scripts, we help you see the cycle that keeps pulling you apart, slow it down in the room, and reach the more vulnerable feelings underneath the conflict.

We start by understanding how the two of you got here before we try to change anything. From there, sessions become a place to practice something new together: saying the harder, truer thing, and hearing it from each other.

Your psychologists

Two licensed psychologists, both couples-focused.

Both clinicians at our Pasadena office hold doctorates in psychology, and both see couples. Our care coordinator will help you decide which is the better fit for the two of you.

Behind the work

More than one mind on your relationship.

Couples work is hard to do well alone, so we don’t. Every other week, Dr. Kim leads a couples case consultation that our clinicians attend, and Coastal Therapy Group also brings in outside couples-therapy experts to consult on our cases. Your psychologist is sharpening their work alongside colleagues, not practicing in isolation.

Couples Intensives in Pasadena

When a weekly hour isn’t enough.

A Couples Intensive is a single, focused three-hour session. It skips the warm-up time of shorter sessions and goes straight to the core of what is stuck. It suits partners who want to move faster than a weekly hour allows, who feel stuck, who are facing a decision, or who are working through a betrayal.

Both Dr. Kim and Dr. Munson lead Couples Intensives at our Pasadena office. Ask about them on your free consultation call, or read more about how Intensives work.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about couples therapy in Pasadena.

01 Do you offer couples therapy and marriage counseling in Pasadena?

Yes. Our Pasadena office is at 30 N. Raymond Ave, Suite 214. Both of our psychologists here, Dr. Jessica Kim and Dr. Sonja Munson, see couples and married partners in person, and online anywhere in California.

02 Is couples therapy different from marriage counseling?

Not in how we work. Whether you are married, engaged, or dating, the work is the same: slow the cycle down enough that each of you can see what the fight has been protecting, and find a way back to each other.

03 What happens in the first few sessions?

We start by understanding how the two of you got here before we try to change anything. That means hearing from each of you, looking at the pattern you keep falling into, and getting a sense of what each of you learned, early and elsewhere, about being close to someone.

04 What approach do you use?

Our couples work draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and relational, psychodynamic approaches. We treat the relationship itself as the client, help you see the cycle that keeps pulling you apart, and reach the more vulnerable feelings underneath the conflict.

05 What is a Couples Intensive?

A focused three-hour session for partners who want to move faster than a weekly hour allows, or who are stuck, facing a decision, or working through a betrayal. Both Dr. Kim and Dr. Munson lead Couples Intensives in Pasadena.

06 How much does couples therapy cost in Pasadena?

Couples sessions in Pasadena are $300 to $350 for 55 minutes, depending on the psychologist, and a Couples Intensive is $900 for one three-hour session. Current rates are always on our Cost + Info page.

07 Do you take insurance?

We're a private-pay, out-of-network practice. We provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement, and many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed for a meaningful portion of their sessions.

08 Can we do some sessions online?

Yes. Both psychologists also see couples by secure video anywhere in California. Some couples meet in person every week, some are fully online, and many mix the two, which can make two schedules easier to coordinate.

09 Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes, on a limited basis. Share both of your schedules on your free consultation call and we'll see what fits.
