Understanding ADHD
If you wonder why you struggle to pay attention to things you care about, start new projects without finishing previous ones, struggle to stay seated, or why your performance does not reflect your intellectual capabilities, you may benefit from a comprehensive evaluation for ADHD-related concerns.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Symptoms of ADHD may look like difficulties with attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. However, how ADHD shows up for you or your child may look different than how it presents for others.
Why ADHD Assessment?
Our ADHD testing services offer a thorough assessment process to accurately diagnose ADHD and differentiate it from other conditions that may present similar symptoms. By undergoing testing, you or your loved one can gain a deeper understanding of cognitive functioning, behavioral patterns, and potential areas of strength and weakness. Assessment can aid in developing more individualized treatment plans, which may include added academic/occupational support and resources.
Not sure if it's ADHD?
Six signs that suggest a professional evaluation is worth it:
• You start things with energy, then lose steam before they're finished.• You miss details at work or school, not because you don't care, but because your attention keeps drifting.
• Time moves weirdly for you: what felt like 20 minutes was actually two hours.
• You've been told you interrupt, talk fast, or seem restless in meetings.
• You rely on pressure, deadlines, or caffeine to function — and crash when they're gone.
• A partner, parent, or teacher has wondered out loud whether it might be ADHD.
Any of these on their own doesn't mean ADHD, everyone has off days. But if several of them feel like a pattern, a formal evaluation is how you stop guessing.
Our Approach to ADHD Testing
At Coastal Therapy Group, we take a comprehensive approach to ADHD testing, recognizing the unique needs and experiences of each individual. Our licensed psychologists conduct a series of assessments, which include:
- Clinical Interview. We begin by gathering detailed information about your medical history, developmental milestones, and current symptoms.
- Behavioral Observations. We observe behaviors in various settings to gain insight into attention span, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
- Cognitive Testing. We assess cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and executive functioning through performance based tests.
- Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Functioning Assessment. We utilize validated rating scales completed by you, your family members, and teachers to gather additional information about symptoms and functioning.
Personalized Recommendations + Support
Following the assessment process, your testing clinician will provide you with a comprehensive report outlining the findings and recommendations tailored to your unique needs. Whether a diagnosis of ADHD is confirmed or not, we offer guidance, support, and resources to help you or your loved one navigate challenges and thrive.

Common questions
Frequently asked ADHD testing questions.
The questions below come up almost every week. If yours is not here, the 15-minute call is the place for it.
What does an ADHD evaluation actually involve?
A clinical interview about your history, developmental milestones, and current symptoms; performance-based cognitive and attention testing (working memory, processing speed, executive function); a Rorschach performance-based personality assessment to examine thought process, emotional functioning, and contributors that often look like ADHD; validated rating scales completed by you and, where relevant, family members, partners, or teachers; and a feedback session where we walk through what we found. You leave with an integrated written report that includes the diagnostic conclusion and concrete recommendations.
Why do you include the Rorschach in an ADHD evaluation?
The Rorschach is a performance-based assessment that gives us information about thought process, attention to detail, emotional regulation, and reality testing — areas that often look like ADHD but are actually being driven by anxiety, trauma, depression, or a more complex picture underneath. Including it means we're not just measuring attention in a vacuum. We're testing whether the attention difficulty you're experiencing is ADHD, something else, or both, with data instead of guesswork. This is part of why CTG evaluations tend to give answers that previous single-question assessments missed.
How long does ADHD testing take?
Typical evaluations involve 4 to 6 hours of testing across one or two appointments, plus a 60-minute intake and a 60-minute feedback session. From the first appointment to receiving the written report is usually 4 to 6 weeks.
How much does ADHD testing cost?
ADHD evaluations start at $3,000. We give you a working estimate at the free consultation based on the referral question. If testing surfaces a more complex picture and additional measures are clinically warranted, we'll talk with you before doing any work outside the original scope.
What ages do you test?
We evaluate ages 5 and up. For younger children, parent and school input weighs heavily. For teens and adults, we incorporate self-report alongside performance testing.
What's the difference between an online ADHD screener and a formal evaluation?
A screener flags whether ADHD is worth investigating. A formal evaluation answers the question. The screener cannot rule out other conditions that look like ADHD (anxiety, sleep disorders, trauma, depression, learning differences, autism), and it cannot produce documentation for accommodations or treatment planning. A comprehensive evaluation does both.
Will the report support accommodations at work or school?
Yes. Reports include diagnostic conclusions and documentation appropriate for ADA accommodations, IEP/504 plans, college disability services, professional licensure boards, and workplace accommodation requests.
Can ADHD testing also assess for autism, learning differences, or anxiety?
Yes. Most adult and teen ADHD referrals at CTG are not pure ADHD questions. We routinely differentiate ADHD from anxiety, depression, sleep issues, trauma, and learning differences as part of the standard evaluation. If you suspect autism is also part of the picture, we offer integrated AuDHD evaluations that assess both at once.
Do I need a referral to get tested?
No. You can book a free consultation directly with our team.
Will I be prescribed medication after the evaluation?
We don't prescribe medication, but the report gives your prescribing provider (psychiatrist, primary care physician, or psychiatric nurse practitioner) the diagnostic clarity they need to make informed decisions about medication. We can refer to trusted prescribers if you don't have one.
Can I do ADHD testing online?
Some components of the evaluation can be conducted via telehealth, but core performance-based attention measures are most reliably administered in person at our Vista office. We'll discuss the right format for your case at the consultation.
