A therapy office since 1978

Almost fifty years of therapy, in these rooms.

When the building at 2564 State Street opened in 1978, this suite became a therapy office — and it has never been anything else. People have been sitting down in these rooms to do this exact work for nearly half a century. We became the suite's current tenants in 2022, after years of having our eye on it, and it's been the clinical home of our Carlsbad team ever since.

It was built for privacy and it shows: five therapy rooms full of natural light, a waiting room that's private to our clients, and a private exit. That means you can leave your session without crossing paths with anyone on the way out.

Every clinician here holds a doctorate in psychology. That means thousands of hours of supervised clinical training, real depth in assessment and diagnosis, and treatment shaped around the person in the room.

In the heart of the Village

Our therapy office in Carlsbad Village.

Our clients love this location, and it's easy to see why. The office sits on North State Street, surrounded by the best restaurants in Carlsbad — and one block from the Buena Vista Lagoon, where benches along the water offer one of the quietest views in the Village.

Therapy here comes with a rhythm of its own: a walk down State Street before your session, or a few unhurried minutes on a bench by the lagoon afterward, letting the hour settle before you step back into your day.

Getting here is simple: from the 5, exit Carlsbad Village Drive, head west toward the ocean, and turn right onto State Street. Parking is free on the street, with a public lot one block east.

Why people start therapy here

You don't need the perfect words to reach out.

People rarely come to therapy with a tidy diagnosis in hand. They come because something isn't working. Some of what brings people to our Carlsbad office:

  • 01 Anxiety that hums underneath everything, even the good days
  • 02 Depression, numbness, or a flatness you can't quite explain
  • 03 A relationship where the same argument keeps coming back around
  • 04 Grief — recent, or the kind you never really got to have
  • 05 Questions of identity, belonging, or who you are outside the roles you play
  • 06 Wondering whether ADHD, autism, or a learning difference has been part of the story all along
  • 07 No crisis at all, just a desire to grow and become a better version of yourself

If you see yourself somewhere on this list, or you don't and you just know something needs to change, that's enough to start. Our care coordinator will help you figure out the rest.

What we offer in Carlsbad

Individual, couples, and group therapy — plus testing.

01

Individual therapy

Weekly, one-on-one work with a therapist who gets to know you — not just your symptoms. Our Carlsbad therapists work with kids, teens, and adults on anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, grief, identity, and the patterns that keep repeating.

02

Couples therapy

When communication has broken down or the distance has crept in, couples therapy is a place to slow down and look at what's happening underneath. We use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and relational approaches to help partners find their way back to each other.

03

Grief group

Our grief support group meets right here in this suite: a small, steady circle for people carrying a loss, led by a doctoral-level clinician. The rest of our group program, from process groups to DBT skills, meets at our Vista office fifteen minutes away.

04

Psychological testing

Every testing service starts and ends in Carlsbad: your intake and your feedback session both happen here, for every evaluation we offer. The structured testing days themselves take place in the dedicated assessment suite at our Vista office, and we coordinate all of it from the first call.

Testing intakes and feedback happen here for every evaluation we offer: ADHD, autism, learning & academic functioning, and personality. Carlsbad clients also come to us for teen therapy, trauma work & EMDR, anxiety, depression, and therapy with a male therapist.

Anxiety therapy in Carlsbad

When anxiety starts running the day.

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people reach out to our Carlsbad office. Sometimes it looks like worry that will not switch off. Sometimes it looks like a body that stays braced long after the thing has passed. We offer anxiety therapy in Carlsbad for children, teens, and adults, in person at 2564 State Street or online anywhere in California.

  • 01 Generalized anxiety: worry that moves from one thing to the next and never quite lands.
  • 02 Social anxiety: replaying conversations afterward, bracing before rooms, avoiding the thing that actually matters.
  • 03 Panic attacks: the surge that convinces your body something is badly wrong, and then the fear of the next one.
  • 04 Health anxiety: checking, searching, and reassurance that never holds for very long.
  • 05 OCD: intrusive thoughts and the rituals that promise relief and keep asking for more.
  • 06 Specific phobias, including fear of flying.
  • 07 Anxiety that sits on top of something older, and will not lift until that gets looked at.

Our doctoral-level clinicians integrate CBT, ACT, exposure, and mindfulness on a relational, attachment-based foundation, so anxiety treatment here addresses what is driving the anxiety and not only how to manage it. You can read more about our anxiety therapy or, if the pattern is intrusive thoughts and rituals, our OCD therapy. You do not need to be in crisis to begin. Plenty of people come simply because they are tired of running at this pitch.

Relational psychodynamic therapy

We're interested in what's underneath.

Coastal Therapy Group is a relational, psychodynamic practice. In plain terms: we take the time to truly know you, not just manage your symptoms. We're interested in the patterns underneath — where they came from, what they've been protecting, and what it would take for them to loosen their grip.

That kind of work happens in a relationship. Your therapist won't be a blank screen or a cheerleader. They'll be a real person: present, honest, and rooting for you, helping you understand yourself in a way that actually lasts. Understanding, not just coping.

One practice, three offices

Three North County offices, closer than they seem.

Our three offices form a triangle over coastal North County: Carlsbad Village, Encinitas on Saxony Road, and Vista just off the 78. No two are more than about twenty minutes apart, and most of the area we serve lives inside that triangle.

Encinitas is ten minutes down the coast. And Vista, home to our largest office, our group program, and our testing suite, is easier than most people expect: straight out the 78 to the Mar Vista exit, with not a single stop sign between the freeway and our parking lot.

So don't pick an office first. Pick up the phone. On a free 15-minute call, Kari, our care coordinator, matches you with the right therapist first, then the location that actually fits your week, whether that's here in the Village, down the coast, off the 78, or online.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about therapy in Carlsbad.

01 Do you offer in-person therapy in Carlsbad Village?

Yes. Our office is at 2564 State Street, Suite B, on North State Street in the heart of Carlsbad Village, one block from the Buena Vista Lagoon. We offer in-person individual therapy, couples therapy, our grief support group, and testing intake and feedback sessions here, plus telehealth throughout California.

02 Who do you work with, and what areas do you serve?

Our therapists here work with kids, teens, adults, couples, and families. Many clients come for anxiety, depression, relationship strain, grief, ADHD, identity concerns, and major life transitions, from Carlsbad Village, Olde Carlsbad, the Barrio, La Costa, Bressi Ranch, Aviara, Oceanside, Encinitas, and Leucadia.

03 Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes. Couples work is one of the largest parts of what we do here, and our Director of Couples Therapy practices at this office. Several therapists on the team see partners weekly, drawing on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and relational approaches to slow down the arguments that keep repeating and look at what is happening underneath them.

04 Do you offer psychological testing in Carlsbad?

Yes. Every testing service we offer starts and ends in Carlsbad. Intake appointments and feedback sessions for ADHD, autism, learning, and personality evaluations all happen at this office. The structured testing days take place in the dedicated assessment suite at our Vista location, about fifteen minutes east off the 78, and we coordinate the whole process from your first call.

05 Do you offer group therapy in Carlsbad?

Our grief support group meets here in the Village. The rest of our group program, from process groups to DBT skills, meets at our Vista office. All groups are led by doctoral-level clinicians, and joining one starts with the same free consultation call.

06 Do you offer trauma therapy or EMDR in Carlsbad?

Yes. Working through trauma is some of the deepest work we do, and several of the therapists here specialize in it, including EMDR with clinicians trained in that approach. You can read more about trauma therapy on our site, or ask Kari about the right fit on your free consultation call.

07 How much does therapy cost in Carlsbad?

Our standard fee ranges from $230 to $300 per 45-minute session, depending on the therapist. Every session here is with a doctoral-level clinician, and you can find current rates for therapy, couples work, and testing on our Cost + Info page.

08 Do you take insurance?

We're a private-pay, out-of-network practice. We provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement, and many clients with PPO plans are reimbursed for a meaningful portion of their sessions. Kari can walk you through how that works on your free consultation call.

09 Are your therapists licensed psychologists?

Every clinician at this office holds a doctorate in psychology: a PhD or PsyD. Most are licensed psychologists, and our team also includes doctoral-level postdoctoral fellows practicing under supervision. In every case that means thousands of hours of supervised clinical training and real depth in assessment and diagnosis. And if credentials matter to you, they matter to us too: ask Kari anything on your free consultation call.

10 What can I expect when I walk in?

The suite has been a therapy office continuously since the building opened in 1978 — nearly fifty years of this work in the same rooms. It has five therapy offices, a private waiting room reserved for our clients, and a private exit, so you can come and go with complete discretion. And it sits in the middle of Carlsbad Village, surrounded by some of the best restaurants in North County.

11 Do you offer evening appointments?

Yes. Several of the therapists here offer evening availability. Share your scheduling constraints on your free consultation call and we'll match you with a clinician whose schedule works for yours.

12 Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. Every therapist at this office also sees clients via secure telehealth, anywhere in California. Some clients meet in person weekly, some are fully online, and many mix the two depending on their week.

13 Where do I park, and how do I find the office?

Free street parking is available on State Street and the surrounding blocks, and there's a public lot one block east. From the 5, exit Carlsbad Village Drive, head west toward the ocean, and turn right onto State Street. We're a few blocks up on the left.

14 How do I get started?

Call or text us at (760) 334-6262, email info@coastaltherapygroup.com, or fill out the contact form on our Get Started page. Kari, our care coordinator, will learn what you're looking for, match you with a therapist, and schedule a free 15-minute consultation. Most new clients are in session within a week of that call.
