Insight Sessions · North County San Diego
A focused psychological assessment, in three sessions.
Sometimes the most useful thing is not more effort, but more understanding. An Insight Session is a short, structured psychological assessment with a licensed psychologist. For adults it centers on the MMPI-2, one of the most researched personality assessments in psychology, and a collaborative feedback session that turns the results into plain, useful language. You leave with real clarity about the patterns shaping your mood, relationships, and choices.
How Insight Sessions work
1. A 55-minute clinical intake
A relational, collaborative conversation to understand your history, current concerns, and the emotional themes that may be shaping your life.
2. A robust psychological assessment between sessions
Adults complete the MMPI-2, one of the most researched and validated personality assessments in psychology. Children and teens complete age-appropriate measures. Either way it is a single, robust assessment that brings clarity to patterns in mood, personality, coping, and cognitive functioning.
3. A 55-minute feedback session
We meet again to review the key themes and findings, answer your questions, and clarify recommendations and next steps. That might be therapy at CTG, coordination with an outside therapist, or a stand-alone plan moving forward.
Optional: written reports are available by request after the feedback session.
What makes it a collaborative MMPI-2 feedback session
A lot of assessment ends with a report you read alone, or a diagnosis handed to you across a desk. We do the opposite. The feedback session is a conversation. We sit with your MMPI-2 results together, connect what the data shows to what actually happens in your life, and translate it out of clinical language into something you can use.
You are part of the interpretation, not the audience for it. Your reactions shape the read: if a finding does not fit, we say so and look closer. The goal is not a verdict on you. It is a clearer, more compassionate picture of how you are wired, where you get stuck, and what tends to help.
- Bring what you want to understand. If there are specific questions on your mind, we build the conversation around them.
- Read for strengths, not just problems. We look at what is working and what protects you, not only where you struggle.
- Something to keep. You can request a written summary after the session, in the same plain language.
There is research behind this. When feedback is collaborative and person-centered, the assessment itself tends to help. People come away with more self-understanding and more hope, not just more information.
What you'll walk away with
✔ Greater clarity about what's going on
Insight into emotional patterns, coping strategies, personality dynamics, stress responses, and relational themes.
✔ A more personalized understanding of what you (or your child) needs
This process offers more than general advice. It clarifies what support is most likely to help, given your specific patterns and strengths.
✔ Clearer next steps
Whether the next step is therapy, a particular therapy focus, additional supports, parenting guidance, or further assessment, you leave with more direction.
Who Insight Sessions help
Adults
An Insight Session can help if you're experiencing:
- Anxiety, panic, chronic worry, or overwhelm
- Depression, numbness, irritability, or low motivation
- Relationship patterns you can't seem to change
- Burnout, perfectionism, or high-functioning distress
- Feeling stuck or unclear, even if you're already in therapy
- Life transitions, identity shifts, or decision points
Children & teens
Parents often seek Insight Sessions when a child is experiencing:
- Big emotions, anxiety, shutdown, or irritability
- Behavioral struggles at home or school
- Social difficulties or peer conflict
- Academic stress, attention concerns, or motivation struggles
- Family transitions, grief, or developmental stressors
This process helps clarify what may be happening beneath the surface, and what kinds of support are most likely to help. For younger clients, it often works alongside child and teen therapy.
How this is different
Insight Sessions vs. a single session or couples intensive
Three focused formats people often mix up. An Insight Session is an assessment. The other two are single conversations built for a different purpose.

Where we offer Insight Sessions
Insight Sessions are available in person at our Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista offices, or by secure video anywhere in California. In Encinitas, Insight Sessions are one of the main ways new clients begin with us.
Using Insight Sessions with therapy, or without it
Insight Sessions are flexible and can support different paths:
Before therapy
A clearer beginning for those who want more direction and personalization from the start.
During therapy
A helpful reset or clarifying checkpoint when therapy feels stuck, or when new concerns emerge.
As a stand-alone process
A meaningful option for those who want clarity and guidance without committing to ongoing therapy right now.
Alongside therapy elsewhere
With your written authorization, we can coordinate with an outside therapist when that helps.
Many people move from an Insight Session into ongoing therapy, and many use it purely for clarity. Either way, the assessment stands on its own.

Insight Sessions
Frequently asked questions
What are Insight Sessions?
An Insight Session is a short, focused psychological assessment with a licensed psychologist. It runs across three appointments: a clinical intake, a single robust psychological assessment completed between sessions, and a feedback session that ties the findings together into clear next steps. The goal is understanding, not a label.
What do Insight Sessions cost?
Insight Sessions are $840 total, billed as three parts of $280 each: the intake, the assessments, and the feedback session. Optional written reports are billed separately at a prorated rate, discussed with you in advance. Full fees, superbills, and insurance are covered on our Cost and info page.
Who conducts Insight Sessions?
Insight Sessions are conducted by our licensed psychologists and our postdoctoral fellows, all doctoral-level clinicians at Coastal Therapy Group.
Where are Insight Sessions offered?
In person at our Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista offices, or by secure video anywhere in California.
Do you offer MMPI-2 feedback sessions?
Yes. For adults, an Insight Session is essentially a collaborative MMPI-2 feedback session: you complete the MMPI-2, and we walk through what it shows in a focused feedback meeting, in plain language. It is built for self-understanding and clarity, not for court-ordered, pre-surgical, or fitness-for-duty evaluations. For children and teens we use age-appropriate measures instead.
What is the MMPI-2?
The MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2) is one of the most researched and widely used personality assessments in psychology. From your responses to a large set of questions, it maps patterns in mood, personality, coping, and how you relate to others, which is what we review together in the feedback session.
How is this different from a Single Session Consultation?
An Insight Session is a three-appointment assessment: intake, a single robust psychological assessment, and a feedback session, built to surface patterns in mood, personality, coping, or cognition. A Single Session Consultation is one longer conversation about a specific question or decision. Different shape, different use case.
Is this the same as comprehensive psychological testing?
No. Insight Sessions are a focused, assessment-informed process, not a full diagnostic battery. If comprehensive testing (for example ADHD or autism evaluation) is the better fit, we can point you to those options.
Will I receive a diagnosis?
Possibly, but the goal is deeper understanding, not labeling. A diagnosis may emerge when it is clinically appropriate, but it is not guaranteed.
Can I submit a superbill?
A superbill requires a diagnosis. Once you begin therapy and your therapist determines one, they can provide a retroactive superbill for the Insight Session.
Can Insight Sessions be used if I'm already in therapy?
Yes. Many people use Insight Sessions in the middle of ongoing therapy when they want added clarity or a fresh perspective.
Can you share results with my therapist?
Yes. With your written authorization, we can coordinate with your CTG therapist or an outside therapist.
Do I need to start therapy at Coastal Therapy Group afterward?
No. Insight Sessions can be a stand-alone service or used alongside therapy anywhere.
