Who it's for

You don't need a crisis to begin.

Most people reach out when something has become hard to carry alone, anxiety that won't quiet down, a loss that still aches, a relationship that keeps repeating the same painful pattern, or a low, stuck feeling you can't quite name. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to start. If life feels heavier than it should, that's reason enough.

Individual therapy at Coastal Therapy Group gives you a steady, private hour that's entirely yours. Working one-on-one with your psychologist, you'll make sense of what you're feeling, understand where it comes from, and build a different relationship with the parts of yourself that have been running the show.

What it is

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is regular, confidential time with one psychologist, usually weekly, focused on you. Early sessions are mostly about getting to know each other, your history, what brought you in, and what you'd like to be different. From there, the work becomes a conversation: you talk, your psychologist listens closely and reflects back what they notice, and together you follow the threads that matter.

Some weeks you'll arrive with something specific to work through. Other weeks you'll start with "I'm not sure where to begin," and that's fine. Often the most important material shows up when we're not forcing it. Over time, the relationship itself becomes part of how you heal: a place where you can be honest, be seen, and try out new ways of being that carry into the rest of your life.

How our psychologists work

We work with the story underneath the problem.

We practice from a relational, psychodynamic point of view. In plain terms: we pay attention to the patterns underneath the problem, not just the problem on the surface. Anxiety, conflict, and old habits usually make sense once you understand the story they come from, and lasting change tends to follow understanding, not the other way around.

That doesn't mean endless talk with no direction. It means your psychologist stays curious with you, offers real perspective, and helps you connect the dots between what happened then and what's happening now. Every clinician here holds a doctorate and works with careful attention to the relationship between you, because that relationship is where the work actually happens.

Fit matters more than almost anything else in therapy. Straightforward about cost.

We're an out-of-network, private-pay practice, which lets our psychologists keep their caseloads small and give you their full attention. If you have out-of-network benefits, we provide a monthly superbill you can submit for partial reimbursement, and we're happy to walk you through how that works.

Questions

Common questions.

01 How much does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?

Coastal Therapy Group is an out-of-network, private-pay practice. We don't bill insurance directly, but if you have out-of-network benefits we provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible partial reimbursement. Reach out and we'll give you exact fees and help you understand your benefits.

02 How do I get started?

Book a free 15-minute consultation online or call (760) 334-6262. Our care coordinator will learn what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and match you with the psychologist best suited to help, often with a first session available the same week.

03 Where are you located?

We have three offices in North County San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Vista, and we also offer secure video sessions for clients anywhere in California.

04 How long does therapy take?

It depends on what you’re working through. Some clients come for a few focused months; others stay longer to do deeper work. Most people meet weekly to start. In your consultation and early sessions, your psychologist will talk openly with you about what a realistic path looks like.

05 What's the difference between a psychologist and a therapist?

Every clinician at Coastal Therapy Group is a doctoral-level psychologist, which means advanced training in psychological assessment and treatment. In practice, you're working with someone who has spent years learning to understand the deeper patterns behind what you're feeling, not just manage symptoms.

06 Do I need a specific problem or diagnosis to start?

No. Plenty of people come in simply because something feels off, stuck, or harder than it used to be. You don’t need a crisis or a label to benefit from therapy. Wanting things to feel different is enough.

Ready when you are
