Coastal was founded in 2018

by Reid Kessler, PsyD, and Lindsey Robertson, PhD quickly joined him as a full co-owner.

We met in 2011 while in graduate school together in Los Angeles. Having both greatly benefited from being part of such a caring, intellectually curious, and actively growing group of mutual friends in graduate school, we sought to create a supportive and growing community for psychologists in north county San Diego.

Our vision was that clients would get the best psychological care if we build a strong community that is actively supporting the clinicians. This includes growing in professional knowledge and skills through guest lectures, presenting to each other, studying together, and consulting weekly.

It also includes knowing one another and actively cultivating strong relationships, where transparency, compassion, feedback, process reflections, playfulness, and rhythms of rupture-repair are the norm. We do art nights, happy hours, dinners, parties and know about each other’s lives. Each week for our consultation hour, before diving into professional and clinical discussion, one of our psychologists leads a group meditation then we each share a check-in about how we are doing. Being a psychologist necessitates being actively and emotionally engaged in people’s lives; for us, being known and valued by our colleagues makes us more able to show up with wholeness and presence in that work. As a practice that values training and houses a post-doc fellowship, we identify with the communitarian model of clinical training and aspire to that model’s view of professional community. Learning and working together in this framework continues to help us grow in clinical competency, avoid burnout, and enjoy our work.
